I came across some 2 gallon Crimson Queen that are grafted high. I saw two that I liked the form, but wasn't sure so I grabbed both since I know they will be all gone after the weekend. I will return one to the store. Here are the two trees characteristics Tree A - grafted at 16" - long interodes, less fine growth, scion appear not as long - less branches, less leaves - nice curve on the scion Tree B - grafted at 20", taller - shorter internodes, more small leaves, scion younger? - more branches, more leaves but they are smaller - bark has vertical cracks near the bottom You can view the trees here: http://www.sfu.ca/~rhui/house/tree/ or download a zip file of the pictures and view (2.7 MB) http://www.sfu.ca/~rhui/house/tree/tree.zip I mainly want to know how will the tree with longer internodes and less leaves (Tree A) turn out, will it produce more coarse growth? Or would the tree B be the best bet for a tree that fills out evenly. it is also 4" higher which I don't know if it is a good thing or not. I have no idea how long it will take to touch the ground. It's not too hard to make a choice by gut feeling, but I really want to learn more about the growth habits on weeping maples and high grafts. Thanks in advance
Tree A. Each of these trees are young enough that you can do what you want with them, but you likely want to avoid problems in the bark as you indicate tree B has and you can't beat a good form to start, Tree A. I am not sure how I feel about you buying both trees, bring them home to post here, and then returning one. If you know the owner of the nursery, that's one thing, but generally, once you buy from a nusery, it is yours unless the quality is suspect and you need to return it? Just my thought. Michael
Thanks, is the vertical cracks in the bark a problem or is it just aging? I bought these from a local "box store". These are priced very reasonably and I know from experience that there will be only be maples with broken branches and partially uprooted trees left after a weekend. I didn't have time to inspect everything so checked out with both to take a look at home later. I have returned plants that I didn't like before, it is not like I took a cutting from it or something then return it.. meanwhile it received better care than crowding together at the store. Anyways, thanks for your concern and advice!
