I just found this site whilst desperately looking for info on propagating mountain ash trees. A helpful neighbour cut down a dead tree, alas, also the few living flowering shoots. When I got home I put the branches in water, but I don't know if there's any hope of survival. Any info would be appreciated.

I don't think there's too much hope, but you can give it a try. Here are a couple of resources:

Sorbus scopulina factsheet (PDF) - Greene's mountain-ash, and one of the mountain-ashes native to the PNW - the factsheet has propagation tips on the second page, and suggests cuttings from the late summer / fall

If you have European mountain-ash, here's an abstract from a scientific paper:

Propagating Sorbus aucuparia ... from softwood cuttings . Unfortunately, the abstract does not say what time of year the cuttings were taken.
