Halfway up a mountain...

    Shasta Red Fir, only grows at elevations about 5500 feet, pretty as hell though... foliage and cones

    Beginning of a conk mushroom at the foot of a rotten hemlock at 10,000 feet up Mt. Shasta.

    MT. Hemlock foliage. This beautiful conifer will not grow below 8,000 feet.

    Forget the name of this butte, but its near the beginning of the ascent to mt. shasta...Easy to imagine a giant volcanic explosion out of the nearby crater.

    Panther MEadows...really nice spring nearby. Natives are trying to fight off the invasion of hippies from Mt. Shasta as this is considered a sacred cultural site...

    This tree is having a hard time getting very tall as the snowpack must be about ten to twenty feet , effectively burying this guy in the winter...

    Is this a pillow basalt? I think so, not sure though...possibly deep oceanic basalt that erupted under high water pressue at the bottom of the ocean...pretty interesting geologic phenomenon, frequent in california...

    I'll say. It's wonderful to go walkabout in other peoples wilderness. Just thinking what a wonderfull time the sulphur crested cockatoos would have there with all the pine cones. Just been watching them on a neighbour's tree as they spit and chew through something.
