Hello, I'm very new to this site. If I posted in the wrong forum, please kindly redirect me. I'm looking for any advice on how to treat my Red Congo Philo that just suffered through a hail storm. Many of the leaves are shredded and the stems snapped. Can the plant survive an incident of this nature? Thank you so much, Devin
Yes, I would say that a plant could live through such an ordeal: key factors in this survival would be the extent and type of damage, and the plant's maturity and previous health. Also essential is that the plant receives attentive care that prevents further stress upon it. Can you give us a photo? Would be helpful in prognosis. Here is excellent info on Philodendron culture: http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Grow or Growing Philodendrons.html Welcome to the Forum!
Thank you, togata57! Please find two pictures attached. I did clip a few stems that were snapped and hanging by just a fiber. I don't know the correct terminology, but there's a fleshy pink exposure down at one of the nodes. I had some new growth there prior to the storm. Devin
Plant looks better than I had feared! Looks as if it should be repotted. Use good soil with excellent drainage, and a considerably larger pot. Give it TLC and keep a close eye on it, be sure that the damaged places are not infected or playing host to opportunistic insect pests, no broiling direct sun, and I think that it will be OK. Will look bedraggled for a while: just give it time.
