There's a very good chance the tree has 'compartmentalised' the knot, i.e., the fungal decay will be confined to the old branch stub and not spread into the rest of the wood. So yes, I'd think the tree can be saved; it isn't necessary to do anything other than break off the rotted wood to improve the appearance.
