I haven't grown them in years but I remember that fall planted Fava Beans survived at least some winters. I believe that the main advantage is an early crop that will avoid some of the usual aphid damage.
I always planted favas in the fall at my old garden in Coquitlam. If you plant now they will be up before frost. They can take a pretty hard winter, although if we have another like last year all bets are off. Not from the cold, but from the ice.
