I seem to have a problem with my green gage tree. It is about 25 years old and has had a bountiful yield every year except last year and this year. There is some foliage on top and around it, but there are a lot of dead branches. There was no flowering last year and this year. What can I do to preserve my tree. Do I need to spray?. Around the trunk is some dried up type of grey moss. The leaves look healthy. Any help would be appreciated. I am in Alberta around Edmonton. No one here abouts have heard of the green gage tree. here are some pics.
    Thanks in advance

Probably something to do with the roots, maybe a wet year when the soil got too damp. The gray stuff is just lichen.

thank you for your reply. Can lichens harm a tree. they seem to be going up the tree trunk. I wonder if that is what is causing the trunks bark to split and cause the tree to not put out any branches.

No, they wouldn't be doing anything like that. The tree is just a surface to grow on. Fences and boulders also accumulate them.

thanks. had me worried. I think I will do the following:
    prune the dead limbs
deep water and fertlize and see what happens next year. I plan to deep root fertlize. how much fertlizer do you think?
    any more suggestion

Sprinkle fertilizer on the surface of the soil. Follow label directions. Might help if infertility is the problem. Otherwise, might not.

the green gage is suppose to be self fertilization. problem is lack of foliage. other things I have heard is that the tree is not suppose to be here in edmonton even though I've had it for over 25 years. Like to keep it for another 25.
