Hello, I am looking for information on starting new grape vines from seedlings to first and second year pruning and feeding the vines. I have been making grape wine for several years and after dumping the seeds near my garden, I have started a small grape trellis. Thank you. Hal Madison
Hello Harold, Growing grapes can be a very rewarding undertaking and you can use the fruit to make wine, another great project. There are a lot of good posts on the forums on pruning grapes. You can find them by using the Search function (on the green bar at the top of the page or better yet use the Search this forum from the opening page of the Grapes and Grape vines forum.) Here is one of the threads with a good link to pruning info: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=11748&highlight=pruning As to starting your own vines from seeds, that can be really fun and interesting, but if you want quality grapes for eating or wine making, I would recommend purchasing known varieties. Each seedling from your grapes will be a distinct plant. Breeders select desirable plants from thousands of seedlings.
