How old (or what size) should root stock be before grafting a scion onto it?

It depends on the size of the scion. Many of us believe that thicker rootstock is better because it has more nutrients and a larger root system to support the graft. I use 3/16" or 1/4" root stock for my grafts. These are about the thickness of a pencil or slightly thicker. Some people like to use even thicker stock. The ideal for aesthetics is to have the scion and the rootstock be exactly the same diameter, but that is really difficult to achieve in most cases.

Thanks so much. That was exactly what I was looking for.
