do you have to remove the top of the maple you graft to? for ex: in on my japanese maple. bonsai i don't want to remove branches but adding some by means of grafting would be great. will any ill effects come to the tree if i dont remove the original portion of the tree after grafting is complete?
Are you thinking about grafting branches of the same species onto itself but in better places? I remember reading the Bonsai boys are pretty particular about where the graft union is. Worried you'd have a 1/2 dozen grafts showing on your small trees.
yes that is what i wanted to do, want to re-locate a branch from the same tree just move it down a bit and to the opposite side. I also have a crabapple that i planted from seed about 10 years ago, it is about 18ft tall now and there are a couple of branches that i wanted to move on this too, has anyone done this? has anyone grafted in the spring?
