Hi, my five-year-old fig tree was just destroyed by gophers. All the leaves have already fallen off and the newest growth and tips are still alive. Even though it's winter, can I still cut off the small branches and root them? Should I use rooting compound in water, rooting compound and put directly into soil, or wrap in wet papertowels and put in refrigerator till spring? And will it make any sense to do this now -- the advice I've seen is to do this in the spring. I don't know the variety of fig as it was given to me without a label.
