Goldfish plant generally refers to Nematanthus species, lipstick plant to Aeschynanthus spp. Both are Gesneriaceae, but Aeschynanthus come from SE Asia and Nematanthus are native to Central and South America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nematanthus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeschynanthus http://www.gesneriads.ca/genemcod.htm http://www.gesneriads.ca/genaesch.htm
Have just purchase a Goldfish Plant in full bloom. A cutting which I received and was told it was a goldfish plant I believe is a lipstick plant. The leaves are are pointy. Has anyone ever heard of a orange lipstick plant. The person I received gave me a picture and the color is definetly orange. Believe most of the time they are deep red. Looking forward to making new cutting from my goldfish plant and when by lipstick plant matures to share with others.
Yes, they do come in other colours. Here is a link to one featured on the Botany Photo of the Day that is orange: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/potd/2006/11/aeschynanthus_speciosus.php The two plants are quite similar and can be difficult to tell apart. If you can post a photo, someone can probably ID it.
Thanks, after looking at the picture believe the plant which I received is definetly a lipstick plant. Will have to wait until I get some flowers, more than likely in the spring when I put the plant outside.
