We have a 50+ year old gingko tree. This year it did not leaf out. The buds appear to be ready to open but have not. I looked in some of the buds - there is green growth inside. Being it is the middle of June and no leaves I assume the tree is dying or dead. The tree is away from roads and salt damage; I didn't think anything could kill a gingko tree. Appreciate any comments on this.
Strange! The buds certainly still look healthy. Try giving it plenty of water, if you've been at all dry this spring.
The buds do look healthy - actually they all pretty much look like the photo. It seems the tree became confused as to what season it is and went dormant.
We did not have much of a spring (warm weather or rain) - that is pretty much the norm. There are 2 weeping cherry trees next to the gingko and they did just fine. I am going to try daily watering the tree - plus fertilizer and see if it helps.
Fertiliser won't help, I'd not add any unless a soil test reveals a particular deficiency. Just water, and some summer heat.
