Garry Oaks in Nanaimo

Discussion in 'Woody Plants' started by Tour Guide in Nanaimo, Aug 23, 2005.

  1. Hi,
I am wondering if anyone knows how old the Garry Oaks in downtown Nanaimo are? There are 3-4, one right near the bastion and a few nearby in Mark Bate Park by the Bistro.
As well, any idea how old the ones on Newcastle Island are?
    Thanks.

The thing about guessing the ages of other-than-very-young trees by how they look on the outside is that size and appearance of trees don't always reflect how old they are. This can vary widely. Little sticks in the gloom of the old growth forest or on inaccessible (unlogged) cliffs or outcroppings can turn out to be hundreds of years old. Scientists use core sampling to find out how old big trees are.
