This is a Cortinarius sp. The subgenus is either Cortinarius or Telamonia. So far, it is easy. But putting a precise species name is hard to impossible. There are countless such species out there and at best they can be id-ed if they have some interesting microscopical feature, which this group very rarely does. Next we need some odor and taste. Macrochemical reactions may be needed too although that with the small brown species they do not help much. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, this group hasn't even been particularly well studied and described yet. Regards, D. www.mushroomhobby.com
