I have cut tree down leaving stump with new shoots (3/4 ft.) growing , three in all. Does anyone out there have any advice for me ?
White Fungus growing up trunk and on to branches all the way to top of tree. One side (North) of tree has no new growth and appears to be dead.
Sounds like old trunk died and got mushrooms because it was already dead. Maybe replacement stems will grow for years without incident. Lilacs are said to be favored by honey fungus (Armillaria). I think being attacked by that could cause an established specimen to dwindle away over a period of years. Web sites will tell what to look for.
