fruit trees

    Its my son 8th birthday and he has suggested a fruit tree for his gift.

    what would be the easiest and most appropriate type of tree for our area?

    any and all suggestions welcome.

    Apples and pears grow well there, so do peaches, but one really, really cold nite in winter can kill them.

    well ,we do get some cold winters here,does this mean some sort of winter prep in the fall?
