Hello~ I was an exchange student at UBC and loved visiting the botanic garden. There was one plant that I loved but forgot its name. It is a woody shrub with fragrant leaves, there were rows of it along a trail in the Asian Garden. Could someone please tell me its name? Thank you~
I suppose it is a species of box, it looks kinda like this photo from wiki. Thanks a lot. The plant was labeled, I wrote down the information somewhere but just can't seem to find it after returning home (stupid). That plant was labeled as having fragrant leaves and has an asian origin. I checked most of the botany books I can find around here but still don't seem to find it, thats why I asked.
Several species of box native to Asia, but of them, Buxus microphylla is the most commonly grown. As its scientific name microphylla suggests, it has smaller leaves than the Common Box B. sempervirens in the linked photo.
It would helpful to know what the plant smelled like and how big they are. The only bank of plants with really fragrant leaves that come to mind in the Asian Garden is Rhododendron cinnabarinum.
Eric, there wouldnt happen to be any Choisya down there would there? Otherwise, I have never noticed Buxus to be fragrant in the foliage region, I need to check that out! :)
