There is a weed free wood plus fish guts soil amendment available locally. I got half a yard and it seems very good indeed. My query is, if the fish component is from farmed fish, should I be using it- one hears horror stories about fish farm waste. Any discussion welcome.
not sure about the waste hazard potential of farmed fish but, be careful if you are in bear country with 'fresh' food or animal waste (trust me, my mother inlaw has an ongoing battle with bears in her compost bins and garden). But if it is composted and blended (like Seasoil, which is from the island, in the Port Alberni area I think, hmmmm) then it should do fine.
It is the Victoria produced Seasoil, and we don't have much in the way of bears- cougars, deer, rabbits, and every slug on the Island, but hardly ever bears.
Seasoil nutrient content vs. nutrient makeup of existing soil would be the main thing to check. You don't want to overapply anything, phosphorus in particular tends to be overdone in home gardens and can become toxic to plants. Sample your soil and have it tested if the Seasoil contains significant amounts of any fertilizer nutrient.
