I have a fig tree in my yard and every winter the leaves fall off and the branches are dry and break easily, but every summer the leaves spring back out , but there is no fruits being produced and also the growth of the tree remains the same, it never seems to get any taller of fuller in the leaves.

What could be causing the growth to stop?

What should I do to protect the tree from the cold of the winter?

Fig trees bear fruit on the older 2nd year branches. How cold does it get in Texas (Alamo) - does it snow, extended periods of cold, chilling winds? The fruit and leaf buds might be frozen. I would expect that your fig does need protection. Up here on the Pacific coast, gardens wrap plants in burlap or install 3-4 2" diameter stakes and put up snow fencing or chicken wire and fill the fencing or wire with leaves or some other material to trap warmth.

Thank you Growing4it recently received a fig tree from my parents and figured it needed some TLC during the cold time :)
