Hi I moved into a new home in late falland in the back yard there is an establish fig tree (not big). The tree had leaves but no fruit. I did not know how to take care of it so I just left it alone. I do not know how old it is or how to prune so it can bear fruit. Please advise.
Re: Winter care for fig tree Hi vpagan....... At this point there's nothing for you to do. Winter is just about over and in a month or so you should know your fate. If it had leaves and no fruit AT ALL, the most likely reason, in your area, is that the tree, although established, is too young to bear. Hope that winter hasn't killed the roots. Sometimes you'll get fruit but they won't ripen which means the warm season is not long enough as is the case with mine sometimes. Don't get me wrong......i had hundreds of ripe figs off of my older tree this past season but also left hundreds more on the plant unripened. It's very frustrating to say the least. You are 40 miles, or so, north of me if I remember my geography correctly.
Re: Winter care for fig tree You will need to wait until spring to see if your Fig tree survived the winter. Assuming that it starts to leaf out you will want to give it some mulch and a good fruit tree furtilizer. If it is small you likely won't need to prune, other than to take off crossing branches and gife the tree the shape you would like. Once the tree begins to leaf out you will also see little nodules where the leaves start - these will grow and quickly become figs. Let me know how things work out.
Re: Winter care for fig tree Thank you for the information. What time of the year is pruning time for fig trees?
