I planted one foot tall cedars about 6 years ago and they have only reached 2 feet! What is a good fertilizer to get them going, please? They are on a fairly steep slope so there is not enough free room around them for fertilizer spikes - granules will have to be used around the base. Thanks for any help at all!
Spikes are inferior to granules anyway. And any fertilizer will only help if soil infertility is the problem.
Do you recommend any particular type or brand of granule fertilizer? Someone said the middle number should be higher - does this makes sense?
Properties of your soil unknown. Soils need to be sampled and tested before possible appropriate fertilizer formulations can be arrived at. Multiple other factors can produce stunted growth as well. Need to figure out what is wrong, then proceed with remedy for that specific problem before improvement can be expected.
speaking in general terms: first number of a fertilizer is nitrogen, promotes green growth second number is phosphorous, promotes flower, fruit and root developmnt. third number is potassium, promotes overall health and heartiness. the trace minerals (on the side label) can be very important too as many of them are synergists for the macro nutrients. As Ron says, you cant medicate without diagnosis. You mentioned they are on a slope I would start to think of available moisture, then perhaps a soil test to see the mineral content of the soil.
