This magnificent fern is growing (self-spored so to speak) in Qualicum Beach BC. I'm thinking it may be Dryopteris expansa (Spiny Wood Fern) but not at all sure about that.

Even if there were details in the photo, I would not be able to do the ID, but if you're close, you could confuse it with Dryopteris dilatata or D. arguta, according to Dryopteris expansa - Wikipedia, which gives some distinctions.
Or you could compare some details to those given at Dryopteris expansa in Flora of China @ efloras.org, during which exercise you could learn lots of new words. Or that would be the case for me, but I can't see any of those details. For starters, you could take photos that demonstrate the points given in the description.
Or even better, UBCBG Garden Explorer has some good photos of D. expansa, so you could see how closely it matches. Dryopteris expansa - northern wood fern | UBC Botanical Garden. The E-Fflora BC link there doesn't work right now, should be E-Flora BC Atlas Page (ubc.ca).

I'd start with checking against lady fern before looking at Dryopteris.
