The 'Beni-shidare' on 13th at Fir is looking perfect right now.

This 'Somei-yoshino' at the Armory on the east side of Burrard at York has been reported in other years in the Kitsilano blog, but it belongs here, I see from the neighbourhood map. The photographer in the photo is here from Quebec for the games and is very pleased that he'll be getting to experience spring twice this year.

'Kanzan' are in bloom on Granville Island and across the small inlet, lining the False Creek shore and in Sutcliffe Park.
    20100415_GranvilleIs_Kanzan_Cutler_P1000682.jpg 20100415_GranvilleIs_Kanzan_Cutler_P1000686.jpg P20100415_GranvilleIs_Kanzan_Cutler_1000691.jpg

[edited by wcutler 2010apr16: I'm replacing the Sutcliffe Park photos with ones from the next day, as it was nice and sunny with blue sky]
I'm looking more for attractive plantings and walkways rather than just masses of pink, although this location has both.

Here is a set of 'Shirofugen' on 5th at Fir, probably a private planting. Certainly also a private planting are the 10 decapitated apple trees on the boulevard. I'm sure this can't be the Park Board's work. Keeps the 'Shirofugen' in the sunshine and visible, though.

Re: Fairview - first posting in 2009

I'd like to mention my appreciation for the flowering cherries on Heather, south of Broadway, looking towards Granville Island. I was stunned by the full pink frame of False Creek and should have taken a photo before the rains started again.

There are a lot of late cherries on 16th from Oak to Cambie. 16th is the border between Fairview and South Cambie, and most of the cherries are on the south side, posted in South Cambie. On the north side, are these three large and good-looking P. avium 'Plena' at Laurel.

This lone 'Amanogawa' on the north side is across the street from a group of eight of them at Willow.

Here's another view of the group of nine 'Autumnalis Rosea' I posted last year, at Old Bridge and Lameys Mill Road. This was taken from the overpass outside Fountain Terrace condo building. You can see the colour from a distance now.

Those 'Autumnalis Rosea' in the previous posting are a lot less exciting now, if that could be possible. I think the bit of frost we had did in this cultivar everywhere in the city.

These two 'Whitcomb' on Lamey's Mill Road at The Castings are open now. If you want blue sky in the photos, look for this location in last year's posting. The last photo are the two nearby on Forge Walk, between the Seawall and Sitka Square.

Hello, this is my first post as a new Cherry Blossom Scout for the Fairview neighbourhood. This past Wednesday afternoon (March 9th) I viewed this Prunus subhirtella 'Whitcomb' under grey skies that later turned to blue:

Location: West 12th Avenue & Willow Street, in front of the old Willow Pavilion at VGH.

'Whitcomb', West 16th Ave & Ash St

There are two of these trees blooming in front of a small condominium on the north side of 16th. Last night I noticed the blossoms were beginning to fall.

Edited to add my apologies for starting a new thread instead of adding to the Fairview thread. Perhaps one of the administrators could move this or delete it and I will resubmit.

Prunus subhirtella 'Whitcomb' in full bloom; tree in front of the old Willow Pavilion, Vancouver General Hospital; photographed March 17th, 2011.

Still looking very beautiful today -- hardly any blossoms falling and still quite a few buds -- so if you're in the neighbourhood, I encourage you to visit the tree this weekend. A lovely way to welcome spring.

This tree was severely pruned a few years ago & I never thought it would recover.

A very young 'Whitcomb' in a private garden behind City Square. The setting sun's light softly illuminated the blossoms compelling me to stop and focus on a few moments of peaceful hanami at the end of the workday.

Thank God for the lovely weather this morning! Although the weather was crisp, the sky was blue and the blossoms were extremely beautiful! Thanks Wendy for the tip on locations!

The Somei-yoshino at Burrard Armoury was at its best!!

    20110406_Burrard+E1_Somei-yoshino_Chan_002.jpg 20110406_Burrard+E1_Somei-yoshino_Chan_003.jpg 20110406_Burrard+E1_Somei-yoshino_Chan_004.jpg

A short distance away at Creekside Park proved to be very fruitful as well. The lone Somei-yoshino at the park entrance was showing off its beautiful blooms!

The many Akebonos that are blooming are also flaunting their colors!

... except for these 2 Akebonos which I think may be late-bloomers? Or are they of another cultivar? ... I'm very curious ......

The flowers look like 'Akebono' on those two not blooming as much. Shirley, you could post photos of the ones at your office in the Hastings-Sunrise thread. Finding a blossom with a staminode in the centre, like in the one kennyc posted, would help.

    Re: Fairview--Unknown white single flower

I found this unknown tree before. I still don't know what it is in the garden of an apartment at 1568 West 12 Ave., Vancouver. This tree is about 4 meter high. Flower diameter aroud 3.5 cm. Another cherry tree is shirotae (not shown here)

    Joseph first posted this here
What cherry? Single white, early mid-season - Joseph's new find
along with another tree that might be the same thing.

I'm copying this to that thread. How about if we discuss the ID there, though it's nice to have the location documented here.

    Akebono at Granville Island

There is an absolutely spectacular mature grove of five huge trees in full bloom now, on the south side of the Granville Island Community centre. When my daughter was one year old I took a photo here of us having a picnic under these trees. She's a teen now!

A little farther along the seawall from nmelzer's posting location, is the Twin Rainbows Housing Co-op at Shorepine Walk. Robert W. White posted the first photo of the 'Akebono' in the garden to the festival's facebook page. It's from his Nicholson Rd Daily April 10 posting. They were at peak bloom that day. I took the second photo today, when they're pretty much finished. There was originally a circle of 'Akebono', but now there remain just the two.

Surrounding the garden are these 'Shirotae' that are at peak bloom right now.

Douglas Justice put me on to this group of five 'Ichiyo' on the west side of Fir just south of 10th. He commented in an email:
    20110425_Fir10th_Ichiyo_Cutler_P1100647.jpg 20110425_Fir10th_Ichiyo_Cutler_P1100653.jpg 20110425_Fir10th_Ichiyo_Cutler_P1100656.jpg

On 3rd at Fir is a two block stretch of 'Kanzan' just coming to bloom. I mentioned the grafting in a posting on Top vs Bottom Grafting in the Are these trees grafted? thread in Ornamental Cherries. Two days ago I commented on a street in Hastings-Sunrise that was all 'Kanzan' except for one 'Akebono' in the middle. Here, each of these two blocks has one 'Akebono' on the east end of the block. The fact that they're in the same place on each block leads me to think they were not a mistake.
