16th Ave at Ash St Compare these photos taken today with those at the same location on 21 March 2008, under this thread. That's only 12 days ago, so we're not too far behind this year in some places. The bark makes a great background for this close-up of a flower.
What a wonderful group of Serrulas on 8th, near Ash on the north side of 8th Avenue. Thank you Wendy for the alert. And, of course, because the bark is so spectaular, one doesn't have to wait for the blooms....
One branch of the Akebono in front of the coffee shop at 16th & Willow is in bloom - it's close to the building, so I suppose it gets more warmth and light. I got a picture, but for some reason my cell phone did not send it.
Rancho - Fairview, Granville from 7th to Broadway I noticed driving by these Prunus sargentii 'Rancho' trees on Granville between 7th and Broadway, west side of the street, that they're starting to pop open. This photo is from further down the street, at 12th or 13th - the light changed and I didn't get a photo of the street sign, like I tell the scouts to do.
Re: Rancho - Fairview, Granville from 7th to Broadway There are really Ranchos between 7th and Granville, but they don't photograph well yet; however, there's a great block of 4 or 5 Ranchos between 10th and 11th, west side. On the east side of Granville outside the Stanley Theatre at 11th, there is at least one young Rancho short enough that I could get decent blossom shots. There is another tree that looks a lot like this quite near it that seems to be an Okame. It's grafted very low, so the tree looks like it's not grafted till you look at the ground.
Douglas Justice put me onto this big old Prunus pendula on 13th near Fir. This is a big old tree that doesn't look to me like it's been grafted. Nearby, on 11th west of Fir, is a group of Akebonos looking as far along as any I've seen. This young Okame is planted in a similar location to a Rancho on Granville at 11th, outside the Stanley Theatre. It doesn't look all that different from the Ranchos right now, though it's supposed to look very different.
Akebono - Fairview, West 1st and Creekside Dr, in park Thanks to Kate Gerson for sending along yet another festival favourite. These Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono' trees are in Creekside Park, at West 1st and Creekside Dr. Closer to the seawall, there is a stand of Somei-yoshinos (Prunus x yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino'), so you can compare the two cultivars. These are also Kate's photos.
When I passed by (in the bus) on Friday, April 10th, the Akebonos that line 16th Avenue from just east of Willow to Oak Street were in full bloom. When I got off the bus at 16th & Oak, I took some shots: Laura 3:)
These spectacular ones (help me, are they Akebonos?) are on the south side of False Creek, on Island Park Walk, near Birch Walk, near the connection to Granville Island. Pictures taken on Monday April 13.
On April 14, More Akebono photos in Granville Island Sutcliffe Park for your appreciation. You can try to take photos with the different effect of sunlight at different timing.
Shirotae - Fairview, Laurel from 10th to 12th Surely these Prunus Sato-zakura Group 'Shirotae' trees on Laurel from 10th to 12th are in bloom now. Maybe someone will post a photo.
Re: Shirotae - Fairview, Laurel from 10th to 12th These three images from earlier this week. This one caught my eye and is two blocks away on Willow & Broadway... Went back today...now they look like this: (If you're already in the area, check out Fairview 7th and 8th Avenue Kanzan blooms just a few blocks north).
Kanzans (along 7th and 8th between Oak & Cambie area) At the beginning of the week: Then on Friday: Up Close:
2009_April_23. East side of Heather Street between West 12th and West 11th. My little Shirotae. Blooming late this year. Pardon the poor quality...some have a little *Renoir* look to them.
Re: Shirotae - Fairview - NW Corner W10th & Heather 23-Apr-2009 The "unassuming little park" on the NW corner of West 10th & Heather is in full bloom. Two Shirotae mark the start of a short footpath that leads to three trees virtually hidden at the other end. A lovely sanctuary.
Fairview - 812 West 12th - VCH Energy Centre On the SW corner of West 12th at Willow stands the brand spanking new VCH Energy Centre. It is the steam generation station for the hospital, and they've created a lovely greenspace around it. 18 Kanzan (?red peeling bark) are installed on on the streetside. Behind them is a discovery park where you can play with the steam by stepping on certain flagstones. Pretty fun. In the 5th picture I have just stepped on a stone. Sometime soon the wading pool will be filled and it's a great place to sit and relax after work and enjoy the trees and gardens that surround it.
Fairview - East Side Oak at West 10th KANZAN at the Peak of Bloom - 28-APR-09 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NE Corner West 10th and Oak (facing West 10th) Just east of Oak St. there are three big Kanzan blooming and full of bees. They dip down to touch you as you pass under on the sidewalk. SE Corner West 10th and Oak (facing Oak Street) 16 Kanzan (I believe) just reaching full bloom. I took the canopy photo on Apr 28th and it's filling in fast. Amongst the multitude of bright pink blooming Kanzan ornamental cherry trees at Oak and West 10th, there is one (1) tree that has a branch of white blooms sprouting out the side. Is it Prunus Avium?
The Serrulas on 8th near Ash are in bloom! They are subtle and sweet blossoms like little ballerinas with traditional tutus. The trunks in the sunlight are gorgeous. In contrast, there are wonderfully showy pink Kanzans with rather dull (probably mazzard trunks) which line the street. This year, it seems the Serrulas have rivalled the Shirofugen for being the last to bloom.
First posting 2010 I rode the Olympics Line today, from nowhere to Granville Island. Actually, it goes from near the Olympic Village Canada Line station, runs for about one mile and takes almost as long as it does to walk the distance because it travels very slowly and it has to meet up with the train coming the other direction so they can pass on the very short area mid-distance where there are two tracks. But I saw two sets of cherries I hadn't known about. These nine Autumnalis Rosea trees are right near the Granville Island stop, on Old Bridge Walk at Lamey's Mill Road. The second photo is from the most exciting bit of the most exciting tree. Still - nine of them should count for something. These two Whitcombs on Lamey's Mill Road at the Castings, just east of the road out to Alder, should make a better photo next year when the landscaping or whatever is finished. At Island Park Walk at Birch Walk is an Accolade just starting to bloom.
I went to Lamey's Mill Road again to get a better train photo and met the building manager, who used to have a cherry orchard in the Okanagan, and who I hope will become a cherry scout. She took me around to Forge Walk, between Foundry Quay and Sitka Square to see these two Whitcombs. Here are better photos of the ones on Lamey's Mill Road at The Castings. It's still early for this Accolade on Island Park Walk, across from the footbridge to the island.
Two sightings on a walk: 1) A group of Whitcombs previously documented on W. 16th at Ash St.: 2) A pendula in front of a building on W. 12th Ave. just East of Ash St.: Laura 3:)
