The flower was very far to smell:( Hard to believe but Paeonia mascula ssp. mascula is in bloom
Thanks for that link, Nadia, which shows as a synonym Magnolia maudiae var. platypetala. Douglas, is that the same as the Magnolia maudiae at 14th and Maple?
The two species, Magnolia maudiae (the tree on 14th) and M. cavaleriei var. playpetala, admittedly look an awful lot alike, but the most obvious differences include the presence of white powdery waxes on glabrous buds, bracts, new shoots and leaf backs in M. maudiae vs. silvery to red-brown appressed pubescence on buds, bracts, new shoots and (to some degree) leaf backs on M. cavalieri var. playpetala. There are three very handsome M. maudiae individuals (from wild collections made by Peter Wharton--PW 126--at the Shen Tan Shan Resort, on Da Yao Shan in norther Guangxi, China) in the David C. Lam Asian Garden. The one in bed B7 (best viewed from Forrest Trail between Lower Asian Way and Siebold Trail) has been in bloom for more than a month.
