We have an Evans Cherry (zone 2b, borderline 3a) that is about 7 years old. In the past, had sparse fruit production though one year had a bumper crop. This year, the tree has a lot of dieback. We have read that they like dry fall conditions so hadn't watered last year. Last year had very dry weather. My question is: what are all possible causes of dieback with Evans Cherry - keeping in mind that we didn't water in the fall. Could we have underwatered? Also, now that we have dieback - can we prune the dead branches in late fall while we can still see what is dead vs. what has growth?
Since I entered the last post, I have noticed that our Evans has blossom sets on it and it's August 9!!! There are about 4 different sets at various stages, one with flowers, 2 that have just finished flowering and have fruit and 1 that is in a mature stage of fruit. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
