Hello, I have found a 15 foot Eucryphia tree at my nursery and it looked lovely. I can't find too much about it. It has crinkled leaves and looks not shrub like but a single trunk. Does anyone have any info on this and I am in coastal BC. Thanks!
Can get quite big (15-20m tall eventually); needs acidic or at least neutral soil (doesn't like limy soil). Well adapted to the coastal climate.
Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver has a beautiful Eucryphia in a partial shade situation. Consider it more a narrow, evergreen tree than shrub. The flowers are lightly scented, too.
Several kinds are grown here. The most prevalent one in local nurseries is E. x nymansensis 'Nymansay'. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/nwest/msg070154431010.html?6 You should be able to find it in gardening books and on plenty of web sites. The 2001 edition of the Sunset Western Garden Book has it on page 342.
