Hello, I have a very large Eucaliptus tree which appears to be very healthy. Unfortunately I discovered a problem caused by a very poor limb cut at the bottom of the trunk near the ground where a large plant pot was hiding the area and causing moisture to build up. This appears to be a very old cut and it was done very badly, cutting into the crease and leaving an uneven cut that has become infected with fungus and worms in a small portion of the cut that has rotted. I can dig out the rotted part and rid it of the worms and clean up the fungus and allow the area to dry out if those are steps I should take? I am hoping you can tell me whether there is a treatment to heal this problem after the initial clean up. Is there some sort of natural remedy that can be applied to the problem area? Also any guidance on how to proceed step by step would be very helpful. Thank you in advance for all your help and consideration. I have included photos of the tree and problem area. I'm very concerned about losing this tree so any quick reply would be greatly appreciated. Kindest Regards, James
All you can do is leave it and hope the tree endures. If it appears there is a possibility of it snapping off at the base later, and this occurrence could cause damage to persons or property then you will just have to cut it down. One thing that really bends them over in this region is ice storms, on those rare occasions when trees are coated in ice here gums are apt to be heavily affected. Damp, heavy snowfalls can also be a problem.
Hi Ron, Thanks for the info. I was reading that fungus silica might be a good option, what do you think? Do you know where I can buy some in Vancouver? Thanks again.
