I have a 50 ft tall Elm in my front yard. When I bought my house the elm was almost dead and the previous owner had cabled it to a pear tree. I took the cabling down and both trees started to flourish. The canopy of this tree is now 5 times what it was when I moved in four years ago. However, the Woodpeckers have made homes in the upper branches and it looks as though the root ball of the tree is coming up and the tree is shifting (falling slowly) at a definite angle. Luckily it is away from my house but I called a tree guy to come look at it and he says to remove the tree altogether. I am in a small town and don't know whether to take the tree down or whether the tree's issues can be remedied. The tree is very large and in the past 6 months the root area immediately surrounding the tree-perhaps a 10 foot area on one side of the base of the tree is becoming a mound. In the center of the mound there is what I thought was a burrow so I tried to fill it but it is a very large hole. Any hope for a very old elm with holes and possible root damage?
    Thanks.
