I recently inherited what I believe to be 3 dwarf citrus trees (I don't believe they are full size), 1 kumquat, 1 heirloom lemon and another unknown variety lemon. They have been in large pots averaging about 2ft wide for a very long time. I was given these trees with instructions to plant outside but I am concerned with the information I have been reading that they should be re-potted to a larger container and not placed directly outside. The trees were located in a garden area outside and have not been placed inside since they were young trees. I live in zone 8, have a very sunny yard and clay soil. I was told to mix potting soil with mushroom compost and fertilizer when transplanting. I am an avid gardener but this is a new area for me, any help and advice will be greatly appreciated as I do not want to lose these trees.

The kumquat is the largest at 3 ft high with a 4 ft spread, it has been pruned and shaped the most of the three. The heirloom lemon is low to the ground with the limbs being full and thick but short in height 18" high at tallest point, with a 3 ft spread. The other lemon is 30" high with a 54" spread. The pots are 20" in diameter. Thanks for your interest.
