Hello! I'm new here and I need some help. I have a land in Spain where I wish to plant some Silver Maple trees (acer saccharinum), but am not sure if these trees can tolerate severe drought conticions in summer. In the place where I liked to plant them there is an acidic soil, very water rich since October to middle-late spring (usually backwater in winter). The cause is the summer here is very dry and heat, I think it's similar to interior parts of California, like Sacramento. So, would the trees growth well once established in that conditions? There are ''acer saccharinum'' inhabiting interior parts of California? I have some trees that growth well in the field, these be ''platanus acerifolia'', ''populus alba'', ''celtis australis'' and ''eucaliptus camaldulensis''. I hope your answers.
Hello, I guess that if the poplar lives, the silver maple will do fine. I've got one growing in a place that is very dry indeed all summer. Although it's obviously not as hot as where you are. They're pretty tough trees. -E
I have a big silver maple in Italy, but for 4 years in the summer I have given water for 5/6 minutes every two days ,and I use pine bark around the trunk .alex
Thank you for the answers. Alex: Are you still pouring the tree in the summer or just the first 4 years? Why you use pine bark around the trunk?
With respect to Alex I don't think this is good watering practice. A silver maple should be watered perhaps every week during the first summer, after which watering will only stop it from becoming established. The pine bark is just mulch. I use grass clippings. -E
Wetcloud ,of course this watering practice,is for Italy climate, young plant in open space, and the land whit dreinage fast ,(if you planted acer near river, lake is not good method)Whit this method my acer is very beautiful and in five years is very high. I use pine bark because for acer is importanty good umidity of roots, but is good leaves of pinus or Emery method too .. alex P.S.5/6 minutes =100/120 litres of water
