I've never seen any north of the Loire, but there are many in "Sologne", south of the Loire, where the soil is much more acidic, and there are many ponds. The first I saw, that was some 30 years ago. I was told they were introduced by the horses and fodder from Australia during WWI, or perhaps from the boots of the soldiers.
