Is it normal for this shrub's leaves to yellow? New growth is happening at the ends of the branches but leaves closer to the base are turning yellow.

Does it need more iron? Or......?

Daphne can be difficult. There is supposed to be a virus around that causes the whole plant to yellow. Otherwise, as with any shrub perhaps it is too moist, too dry or has a nutrient deficiency. Yellow older leaves that aren't just dying and falling off due to being old can be caused by any of the above.

My daphne (varigated) has a leaf drop (partial every year) It is now about 20 years old. Growing in gravelly soil mix next to a driveway under a birch tree. I grew it from a cutting and it has profuse flowering every year late winter. Leaf drop is early autumn as tho it is getting ready for the new stuff and flowers

I've had my d. odora for about 10 years, and found that it always goes through partial leaf drop after the cold winter months. After flowering, there will be a flush of new leaves.
