We have a contorted fibert planted in a protected area(alcove beside front entry) that has been there for 8years. It has grown beatuifully until this spring-it started leafing out & then has just quit, I'm afraid it might be dieing. I have checked for fungus, insects & water content of soil & can not figure out what is going on. Like I said it just seemed to quit leafing out & has been "in limbo" for about a month. I have already cut the suckers back once from the base(usually have to do that a couple of times each summer), so all has been a normal year. Any ideas what could be going on? Help-this is a remembrance tree for my deceased parents. Thanks
Can you see more sucker growth trying to come up, or not? I suspect the graft has deteriorated (have a flowering crab that did the same "thing" to us this spring because of the graft). If there is still sucker growth, this may be the problem, and the contorted plant will have died. If the suckers won't grow either, it may be a disease or herbicide incident...tho filbert blight usually only kills back some of the top growth in any one year, esp. on a well established older plant. You could try googling "eastern filbert blight" to see if anything looks like your plant/situation.
