I have finally emptied my compost bin, which was started in April 2007, about 15 months ago. I stopped composting in December, 2007, because I didn't understand what to do next. In spring 2008, I was advised to dig a hole and put the compost in?
    1. What is the reason for that? Yesterday, I put the compost in containers, because I didn't have a hole dug.
    2. Whatever the compost does, can it do it in the containers instead of in the ground?
    3. When can I sprinkle the compost on my plants? Does it act like a fertilizer on plants?
    4. When can I use it to prepare soil in containers for a vegetable garden in 2009? How do I use it? Do I mix it with potting soil?

    Thank you for your help.

If you can't use it for the moment , eg on the vege garden just store it in the containers if you have enough. Not sure what the idea of the hole was. If there are trees near by they will just grow their roots into it. I would use it for the vegetables or your pot plants or anything that neads a mulchy feed. You just mix it into your soil and maybe add a bit of river sand if using pots so they drain well. You can make your own potting mix this way.

I currently have a bin that has just been sitting for about 2 years waiting for me to get into gear. My other bin (2nd one is the current compost bin. I only use mine for house waste from the kitchen and layer it. I can fill these bins for at least four years the worms come in from the ground and do their thing. It has an open bottom and a loose fitting lid. The results are black gold for vegetables.

    Thanks Liz:

I guess all my plants need a mulchy feed during the growing season, so I could just sprinkle it everywhere throughout the summer.
