Does anyone have any information (or experience) on whether it might be a good or bad thing to add fuller's earth (as used cat litter) to my compost heaps? I know it's a sort of clay but what will the compost worms make of it? The soil round here is chalk based so a bit of clay won't hurt.

Thanks Jocelyn, you're quite right, but I was thinking more of the cat litter that had just been urinated on. I know some men in the UK urinate directly into their compost, it is supposed to add nutrients to the soil. It's the effect of the fuller's earth I'm not sure about.

Fuller's Earth appears to be a clay product and so should enhance your compost. It's the Cation Exchange Capacity of clay the benefits compost. A bit of cat urine should not be an issue. Keep the amount of clay products or soil to around 10% and it should not cause problems with the composting process.
