I am looking for suggestions on a yellow or purple/lilac flowering rhodo that is more sun tolerent than most varieties. I would like an evergreen low growing mounding variety

All like a cool position. None like hot root zones, and even where the plant does well in the open in a cool climate the flowers may melt in sunny weather.

'Ramapo' is tough, dwarf and has been common on the market in the past. Another prevalent one is R. impeditum. Plant these close together in a well-aerated soil, kept mulched and watered in summer. We don't have lots of different kinds of rhododendrons in the mountains here, where the vegetation is otherwise generally similar because we don't have the summer monsoons of the Sino-Himalayan region.
