Can a Clematis root clump be split up into multiple plants once they get too big?

I have split Clematis integrifolia successfully and am about to do it again (I hope). I think that if you have a good sized clump splitting would work for other clematis as well especially if you don't make the divisions too small. Probably best done when the plant is just coming into growth though.

If you see separate crowns in a particular specimen then yes, if not then no.
