A friend of my daughter purchased 3 different varieties of clematis, in three different colors, at 2 or 3 different outlets in the Cranbrook area. All 3 plants bloomed in her residential yard, but all bloomed purple (which one of the varieties was expected to do). Is this usual behavior? If so, and it's cross-pollination, is there any way to prevent it? Or is it impossible, and her plants were mislabeled? I've heard this same story from clients at the garden centre where I work, here on PEI, about lilies. Is it true? Please advise, so I can pass on the correct info to my clients, and daughter. THANX.
Hello SunnyG, I think the plants were mislabelled, or somehow mixed up. There could be colour variation in blooms on plants due to cultural differences, but they should be minor. Cross-pollination would affect the colour of the offspring, not the mother plant's blooms.
