I hope that an arborist or horticulturist will respond. From my observations here at UBC Botanical Garden, these are generally not a problem (especially in comparison to some other much heavier vines). Though, it would be helpful to know what kind of tree and what the situation is--is it a lone tree in a windy spot where the surface area against wind would be immensely increased, for example?
