We were forced last month to cut our armandi right back due to a fence being replaced. Unfortunately no new growth is left and we are left with about 8 foot of old woody growth. To date no new growth has appeared. Is it just wishful thinking to believe it will revive?

I had C armandii through the 80's when we had some pretty cold winters. It was cut to the ground several times and came back nicely, but took quite a while to remerge. I would suggest patience will be rewarded!

    Thanks Joan

Thanks for the ray of hope. How long did it take to see some new growth emerge again? Do you think we should cut it back further?

No, I would not cut any more... and don't give up hope 'til the middle of August!
Or even longer....Christopher Lloyd in his book "Clematis" mentions a clematis hybrid that suffered from wilt, that dread fungal diseease. He cut it back to the ground , and it took 3 years to reappear! Most of us do not have that patience, but I hope this gives you renewed hope!
