I have a few young cherry trees - 2-4years. The bark on the trunk has split completely on the one I have had the longest. I am worried that it is bacterial canker. It started withe orange flecks, but has now exposed most of the inside of the trunk, although no gum has oozed out? I live in England where the temperature is not very warm, and is raining most of the time. Does this sound like bacterial canker? There doesn't appear to be any marks on the leaves, although there hasn't been many cherries appearing - I put this down to it been only 3years old? Should I get rid of the tree, so that it doesn't infect the other trees? I have heard that I should cut away the infected area, but cannot, as it is the trunk! Help!
Is this a vertical split or a horizontal split? It is normal for trees to split vertically due to expansion and contraction of the wood during changing seasons. Without photographs it is difficult to gauge further.
