Cherry blossom facts with a Japanese bent

    Multiple statements there providing a basis for comment. For instance, it says the botanical name for the Somei cherry is Cerasus x yedoensis. However, the specific name x yedoensis embraces any and all cherries of the involved hybrid parentage, with the Somei cherry being a particular kind. And needing therefore its own designation beyond just x yedoensis. As was done here:

    Focusing just on one additional point there is simply no way any cherry tree anywhere is thousands of years old. Japanese accounts making such claims for various big and/or old looking flowering cherry trees also tend not to provide supporting data, may sometimes be translated as stating the ages given are estimated.
