hello everyone, I live in lincoln nebraska and do not have a lot of experience with tree seedlings. This spring my father started 50 catalpa trees from seed and has given them to me. At the moment they are in 4"x4'' containers and will be transplanted into one gallon containers in a week or so. My questions are: 1. should I transplant them in the fall or leave them in smaller containers until spring. 2. How do I winterize them, do I leave them outside with mulch around them, keep in an unheated garage, keep in the basement, etc... 3. do I then plant them in the spring or in the fall. Temps in the winter here can get to 10 to 20 below zero. Any advice given would be greatly appreciated.
Transplant now to the larger containers as they will continue root growth well into fall. For overwintering, plunge the pots into the ground to protect the roots from temperature extremes and protect them from rodents.
