I love my catalpa trees here on the coast, but am moving soon to the interior. What tempurature will they survive in?
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=hardiness,+catalpa&meta= speciosa seems a bit hardier than bignoniodes
Catalpas are a feature of continental climate communities. The US National Champion northern catalpa is at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA.
via the google link that was allready posted: catalpa speciosa: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/treeselector/index_tree.cfm?id=30 and catalpa bignoniodes: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/treeselector/index_tree.cfm?id=29 those links have all the information about those two trees, their hardiness and other growing conditions they prefer.
Northern Catalpa (C. speciosa) will be good down to at least -30ºC though you might see twig dieback at that temperature. On the hot side....not a big deal but in areas with low humidity & low rainfall it is going to need consistently moist soil. Simon
