I left my cannas (Tropicana) in the ground last winter - my garden is in Vancouver. They have not yet shown signs of life this spring (May 22nd). When would cannas typically start to grow here?

    Thanks

When I left my cannas in the ground here in Vancouver, they did not emerge until late May or maybe June. Since we have had such a bad Spring, with cold overnight temperatures for longer than usual, they might not come up until June. Unless you have lots of sunlight, they may not flower this year (mine didn't when I left them in the ground a couple of years ago). This year, I dug them up and put them in pots. I left them in a covered stairwell that goes to the basement of the house and trimmed the foliage after it died. Because it is sheltered there, they did not freeze. I brought them inside a couple of months ago and just planted them out in the yard today.

Our Cannas began to come up about 2 weeks ago here in Nanaimo. They are located in a very sunny/warm location so I suspect the soil temperature has something to do with it. Flowering has never been a problem.
