    Hello!

I'm brand new and unsure where this question should get posted:

I moved into a house a couple of years ago with an established canna by the front porch. It didn't grow very large for the first couple of years (maybe about 3' tall and 2' wide).

This year is another story. Our winter was mild (I live in Atlanta, GA) and the plant took forever to die back but eventually I had to trim the unsightly black, dead stems/leaves. In the spring, this plant has exploded. It's over twice as large as it was last year.

Normally I would let it flourish (I do nothing to help this sucker grow, I don't even water it), but it's starting to take over the sidewalk leading to our front porch. It's still prime growing season, so how should I trim it back? I would also like to transplant some of it to another area of my yard where I can let it "roam" free. Can I do this now or do I have to wait until fall?

Also, oddly enough, the hostas growing right next to the canna are GINORMOUS while 2 feet further the other hostas (of the same variety) are half the size. Does anyone have any idea why the hostas closest to the canna are doing great but the others aren't?

    Thanks!

With cannas... Anything you want to do is fine.
I cut them back with a machete.

You can dig and move them now... perfectly fine.
    You can even eat them...

    Re: the hosta...
Could be the cannas received a bit more fertilizer? Maybe last year's canna growth has given both a boost? Maybe the canna roots have broken up the clay enough to benefit the hosta? maybe the cannas are providing enough shade for the hosta to thrive?
