I planted 8 canna seeds an January 19 this year. Not tubers (or whatever they are) of named varieties, but 8 pea-sized "canna generalibis" seeds.

They grew well. After 2 months they were were 11" tall and after 4 months they were 16" tall.

I planted them outside and they have grown happily. They are about 5' tall right now. They gt a lot of sun.

I will leave them outdoors all winter, which people seem to do here in lotus land.

My concern is that they have never shown any sign of developing flowers. Clearly they will not develop any flowers at this point: I expect winter die back within a month. Shouldn't they have flowers, since they are healthy and happy? I have never read that they only flower in their second year.

From seed ... you'll have to wait until next year maybe the following to see flowering on your Cannas.
    Cheers, LPN.
