Is it true that you cannot drown a grape vine? I am told this is the case. My granddaddy told me you cannot drown a grape vine, no matter how much water you throw to it. He said this goes back to biblical times and beyond, such as Noah and his arc. He also told me that this is a little know fact. Is he putting me on? I have never heard this. Any replies would be appreciated.
Sorry, and meaning no disrespect to your Granddaddy, but he's completely underwater with this one. Some varieties are more resistant to "wet feet" than others, but even these can be killed, either through root rot or by prolonged lack of oxygen to the roots. Ralph
My Italian neighbor had about 200 feet of grape vines on good flat land, but the drainage was poor. After about seven years he gave up, and removed the vines, and planted beans on the elaborate trellis. He has a large group of family. Grapes like many plants like"well drained soil". Few enjoy wet soil (feet)for long periods.
The drainage at our lot is poor and last year my black monukka grape almost died... and then I built a wooden box and planted it about 2ft elevated above the ground line and it is doing just fine now... So yes, my grape vine almost drowned last year G1
